Beauty, home & honest new-mom life

The Junk Drawer That Stopped Being One

Every house has the drawer. Ours held four dead pens, a single AA battery of unknown status, the good scissors, takeout menus from a place that closed, and a pacifier I had been looking for since March. I gave it one nap window and five things, and it has stayed sorted for two months now, which for this house is a record.

Kutesna Interlocking Drawer Organizer, 15 Pieces

Fifteen little trays that snap together in whatever shape your drawer is. The trick is that once they lock, nothing slides around when you open the drawer, so the tape stays in the tape spot. I did a long one for pens, a square for batteries, a small one for the hair ties that migrate everywhere.

Battery Daddy Storage Case with Tester

The single loose battery problem, solved. It holds every size we own in labeled slots and has a tester built into the lid, so the mystery battery gets checked and either goes in the case or the bin. It’s the thing in the drawer I get the most smug about.

Nelko P21 Bluetooth Label Maker

I resisted labeling for years because it felt like a lot. It’s not. This one pairs with your phone, you type, it prints, and suddenly the tray of assorted cords says CORDS and nobody has to ask. It has since labeled the pantry, the freezer and one very confused husband’s lunch.

VELCRO Brand Reusable Cable Ties, 100 Pack

Every charging cord, headphone and spare cable gets wrapped and tied before it goes in the drawer. No more untangling a knot with a baby on my hip. A hundred means the pack lives in the drawer too, and I use them on the stroller and the toy bins as well.

40-Piece Household Tool Kit

The reason the drawer filled up in the first place was that we didn’t have a home for the small screwdriver, the tape measure and the picture hooks. This kit is compact enough to sit in the back of the drawer and covers every little job in the house, so the real toolbox can stay in the garage where it belongs.

The last step was permission to throw things away. Menus, dead pens, the mystery key. If I didn’t know what it was for after two months, it left. The drawer now opens all the way, which it had not done since we moved in.
