The Smooth Legs Situation: Shaving, Ingrowns and Everything After

I shave in about ninety seconds now, usually with somebody shouting from the next room, and for a while the results showed it. Razor bumps, ingrowns, that rough patchy feeling two days later. The fix was not a fancier razor. It was slowing down the two minutes on either side of the actual shaving, which is the part I had been skipping entirely.

TGS Purple Single Blade Razor for Women with 10 Double Edge Blades

A single-blade safety razor, which I bought expecting a learning curve and got one. Two careful weeks later my skin is calmer than it has been since I was a teenager, and the blades cost almost nothing. Light pressure, no stretching the skin, go slowly.

Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel for Women & Men, Fragrance-Free, 7 oz

Fragrance-free shave gel with oat, and it is the boring hero of the whole routine. It cushions enough that I stopped nicking my ankles, and it does not sting the places I have already irritated. Simple, gentle, has never let me down.

First Aid Beauty Ingrown Hair Pads with BHA and AHA

Pads with AHA and BHA for afterwards, which is what actually stopped the ingrowns. I swipe one over the backs of my knees and my bikini line the morning after shaving, not the same night. Every other night is plenty; more than that and you will regret it.

Brooklyn Botany Exfoliating Mitt – 1 Mitt

An exfoliating mitt for the day before. This is the step that changes everything and the one I always want to skip. Firm circles, dry brush or in the shower, then leave the shaving for tomorrow. Do not do both in one session on freshly shaved skin.

La Roche-Posay Lipikar Urea 10% Body Lotion for Dry Skin, 13.52oz

Urea lotion for the rough patches on my shins and the backs of my arms that no normal moisturiser ever touched. It is thick, it takes a minute to sink in, and it is the only thing that has made those areas genuinely smooth rather than temporarily greasy.

Exfoliate the day before, never the same day. Shave last in the shower, on properly soft skin. Treat afterwards, moisturise the day after. That sequence did more than any single product on this list, and I ignored it for years.
