Beauty, home & honest new-mom life

The Front Door, Dressed for Fall

This is the cheapest way I know to make the whole house feel seasonal, because you are decorating about nine square feet and you see it every single time you come home. I did ours on a Sunday morning with the pram parked in the doorway. Five things, nothing permanent, all of it comes back out next year.

Calloway Mills Nature’s Bounty Outdoor Coir Doormat, Non Slip Vinyl Backing

A real coir mat, which is the only kind that actually takes dirt off a shoe. Ours lives under the storm door so it stays dry; coir left in the rain goes flat and sheds. This one is autumn without being a cartoon pumpkin.

Fall Wreath for Front Door, 24 Inch Autumn Wreath with Lamb’s Ear Leaves, Roses and Berries

Lamb’s ear, muted roses, berries — warm and a little undone rather than bright orange. I hung it with a simple over-door hook so there is nothing screwed into the paint. It reads expensive from the pavement, which is the whole trick.

Good Directions Medium Boot Tray, 30-Inch Galvanized Gray Shoe Tray

The unglamorous hero. Boots, wet trainers, the pram wheels in October all land here instead of in my hallway. Galvanised, so it does not rust, and a rolled lip so the water stays in the tray.

Homemory Modern Farmhouse Black Metal Lanterns 2PCS with Flameless Candle

Two lanterns beside the door with flameless candles, on a timer. They come on at dusk on their own, which means the door looks warm when we get home in the dark instead of after I have fumbled for a switch. Waterproof, and no open flame anywhere near a curious baby.

4 Pack 10 inch Flower Pots, Plastic Plants Pots Outdoor

Fill these with mums and set them either side of the step. Drainage holes already in them, which sounds minor until you lose a plant to a pot that holds water. Plastic, so I can shift them one-handed.

The whole thing took under an hour and cost less than a dinner out. Six months later I will swap the wreath and the mums and the rest just stays, which is exactly how much seasonal decorating I have in me.
