The Tiny Grooming Kit: Newborn Nails, Cradle Cap and That Little Nose

Nobody warned me that a newborn’s nails grow like weeds and are sharp enough to scratch her own face in her sleep. Or that the sweet flaky patches on her scalp had a name. Or how much a stuffy nose would affect all three of us. This is the little basket that handles all of it in about four minutes, usually after the bath when she’s calm and I’m not.

Momcozy Electric Baby Nail File

I was terrified of clippers on fingers that small. This buffs the nail down instead, it’s quiet enough to use while she’s asleep, and the little night light means I can actually see what I’m doing at 2am. The soft pads are for newborns, the firmer ones for later.

Safety 1st Cradle Cap Brush and Comb

The soft brush lifts the flakes gently while the shampoo is still in, then the fine comb clears what loosens. Do it in the bath, not after. It takes about a minute and it’s oddly satisfying. I have used it far more than I expected to.

Mustela Cradle Cap Shampoo and Cream Set

Fragrance-free and made for exactly this. The cream goes on before bed to soften the patches, the shampoo washes them out in the morning bath. Within a couple of weeks her scalp was clear. If cradle cap ever looks red or angry or spreads past the scalp, that’s a call to your pediatrician, not a shampoo.

Frida Baby Saline Kit with NoseFrida

A stuffy newborn can’t feed or sleep well, which means nobody does. A drop or two of the saline, then the snot sucker, and the relief on her face is immediate. Yes, you’re the suction. No, nothing comes through the filter. It’s the least glamorous thing I own and one of the most used.

Natemia Wooden Goat-Bristle Baby Hair Brush

So soft it barely registers as a brush, which is the point. I use it after the bath to smooth her curls and on the days between washes to keep the cradle cap from building back up. It has also put her to sleep more than once, so it lives on the changing table now.

Grooming became one of my favorite little rituals. Bath, brush, nails while she’s milk-drunk, done. I keep it all in one small basket by the changing pad so I’m never hunting for the file with a squirming baby in one arm.
